San Agustín de Canterbury, evangelizador de Inglaterra

La Iglesia celebra el 27 de mayo a san Agustín de Canterbury, enviado junto a otros monjes por el Papa san Gregorio Magno a evangelizar Inglaterra. Allí convirtió al mismo rey y a muchos otros a la fe cristiana, fue arzobispo de Canterbury, y fundaron iglesias y monasterios.

Siendo Agustín prior del monasterio benedictino de San Andrés en Roma, fue enviado por el papa san Gregorio Magno, al frente de unos cuarenta monjes, a evangelizar Inglaterra. Desembarcó en Thanet y avisó al rey Etelberto de Kent. El rey, que se había casado con Berta, princesa cristiana de la familia real de los francos, les permitió asentarse en Canterbury, capital del reino, y les dio libertad para predicar. Pronto se convirtió el rey, bautizado en el 597. 

El Papa se alegró con la noticia y envió nuevos colaboradores y el nombramiento de Agustín como arzobispo primado de Inglaterra. Al mismo tiempo, le dijo que no se enorgulleciera por los éxitos y por el honor del alto cargo. Siguiendo indicaciones del Papa, san Agustín erigió otras sedes episcopales, Londres y Rochester, y consagró obispos a Melito y a Justo. El santo misionero murió en 604 y fue enterrado en Canterbury en la iglesia que lleva su nombre.

Cuatro sacerdotes ingleses y dos mujeres coreanas

También se celebra hoy a cuatro sacerdotes diocesanos mártires ingleses, Edmundo Duke, Ricardo Hill, Juan Hogg y Ricardo Holiday, ahorcados y descuartizados en Dryburne, cerca de Durham, el 27 de mayo de 1590, durante el reinado de Isabel I. 

La liturgia acoge asimismo el 27 de mayo a las santas Bárbara Kim y Bárbara Yi, mártires coreanas. Las dos mujeres, por ser cristianas, fueron arrestadas y encarceladas juntas en Seúl. Se negaron a apostatar pese a las torturas, y murieron en la cárcel, el año 1839.
